Kingwood High School’s football team is gearing up for an exciting playoff run after finishing a strong regular season. Competing in one of the toughest districts in the Houston area, the Mustangs faced some of the region’s and state’s top teams, including Atascocita, Northshore, and Summer Creek. Despite these challenges, Kingwood wrapped up the season with a 6-4 record, earning 4th place in their district with a 4-3 record in district play.

Although the Mustangs suffered a tough loss in their district game against Summer Creek, they bounced back with a dominant 41-21 win over the Humble Wildcats in their final regular season game. This victory capped off an impressive season and built momentum heading into the playoffs.

One of the standout players this year has been senior running back Marquez Davis. In the game against Humble, Davis rushed for 329 yards and scored five touchdowns. His performance was a key part of the Mustangs’ success this season. We asked Davis about his leadership role and his thoughts on the season.

“My team has been prepared to shock everyone by making the playoffs since the offseason. We fully believe that we can compete with any team in the state and we are truly blessed to be able to prove it this season. Our offense has made long strides since last season and we plan to improve each day to out score our opponents to eventually win the game” – Marquez Davis, Senior Running Back

Davis’s performances have been crucial, as Kingwood has won five out of seven games when he scores two or more touchdowns. Junior Jailen Monegan also contributed with 100 yards receiving and a touchdown. On defense, Kingwood had a strong showing, with interceptions from Cade Haug and Sam Peterson, and a big fumble recovery and key tackles from Sam Malone.

We also spoke to senior safety Trace Taylor about what’s been different for the team this year.

“I think believing in ourselves and going out and putting up 41 against Atascocita really showed how good we can really be, and now I think every single one of the boys on this team believes in our mission.” – Trace Taylor, Senior FS/WR

Kingwood’s offense, led by a powerful rushing attack, controlled the game against Humble, rushing for 319 yards. This showed how well they can wear down opposing defenses.

What’s Next – Playoffs!

With their win over Humble, Kingwood finishes the regular season with a 6-4 record and secured their fourth straight victory. The team has averaged 38 points per game over their last stretch of games, with strong offensive play leading the way. The Mustangs now look ahead to the playoffs, where they will face Clear Springs on Friday at 7:00 p.m. This will be Kingwood’s first playoff appearance since 2019.
