Mustang Baseball Brings Home UIL 6A Division II Title—First Since ’05!

ROUND ROCK – Saturday, June 7, 2025 – Kingwood Mustangs captured the UIL 6A Division II State Baseball Championship in a heart-stopping 5–4 win over Tomball at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas—Kingwood’s second appearance in school history.

The game began with a triple by Brian Schumacher off Tomball’s starting pitcher and University of Texas commit, Karson Reeder, in the first inning, which was quickly followed by a sacrifice fly from Graham Charboneau to get an early strike. Tomball countered in the bottom of the first to take a 2–1 lead.

However, the excitement came at the conclusion of the fifth. Kingwood answered with four runs off singles from Schumacher, Braden Fuentes, and Nick Spetter, and an intentional walk of Charboneau, before Josh York was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to take a 5–2 lead.

Tomball wasn’t finished; they came back and scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. But sophomore reliever Ryder Renfro closed the door, recording seven outs in the last three innings, shutting down a nail-biting 7th inning by getting Tomball to fly out to center, caught by Schumacher to clinch the title.

Following the win, we asked several players to reflect on the season and what fueled their run to the state title. We began with Senior Caden Callaway, who is headed to Cornell University this fall. When asked what the difference-maker was for this year’s team, Caden shared:

“This team was so close with one another, and every time we stepped onto the field, we all believed in each other and our ability to go out there and win. There wasn’t one game this year where we felt like we were at a disadvantage to any team. We believed in what we had, and we played with a chip on our shoulder each and every day. As a team, it was our mission to prove people wrong, as we started off the year unranked on every article. This pushed us at every practice, workout, and game to give it our all and show everyone who we were.”

Team Win for the Mustangs!

Next, we spoke with Ben Mayorga and Brian Schumacher about how the team stayed locked in and motivated throughout the high-pressure playoff run, especially in the state final against Tomball.

“We have trust and faith in each other. We knew that we could bounce back from early nerves because we had the support of everyone on the team. Throughout this playoff run, we have faced tough opponents. So we knew that we could compete with anyone on the field against us,” said Senior Ben Mayorga.

“As one of the leaders chosen by our coach this year, I tried to make everyone comfortable enough to bond with everybody in the dugout. As seen by the energy we all had, I would say we could all stay focused during those high pressure situations. We always knew from the beginning of the season that we had the ability to be successful so we just had to stay focused and wait for our time to shine in big moments.” – Senior, Brian Schumacher

Title MVP Graham Charboneau (Humble ISD)

Finally, Championship MVP Graham Charboneau, who delivered two doubles and an RBI in the title game, credited the team’s discipline and unity in his KHOU interview, moments after learning of his recognition.

“It means everything. We worked 6 AM lifts…8 AM lifts. We all worked together for this. I could not have done this without my boys.” When asked about winning the title game MVP, he responded with grace. “It’s not me. It’s all my teammates. My teammates got me here. My teammates push me through and got me here.” filled with immense joy, Graham talked about his faith and how this was a team win. – Junior Graham Charboneau.

With a 39‑4 seasonal record, national top‑10 ranking, and state title to their name, the Mustangs have undoubtedly made their presence known. This title wasn’t about baseball alone—it was about faith. It was about the endless practices, early morning workouts, heartbreaking defeats that bred toughness, and the unwavering brotherhood that sustained them along the way.

For Kingwood, this victory is a testament to the fact that when you believe in the process, trust your teammates, and refuse to give up, greatness ensues. The 2025 Mustangs didn’t only make history—they breathed life into it.

Looking ahead, Junior-Evan Morris and Sophomore-Brock Hill took a moment to reflect on what this championship win means for the future of the program and his role as a leader heading into 2026:

That feeling when you realize we just won State!

“As an upcoming leader for the next school year, this opportunity means everything to me. Being someone others can look up to and helping set the tone for growth is a responsibility I’m proud to take on. If I could give one piece of advice to next year’s team, it would be to never lose faith. We were doubted from the start, but we found our rhythm, stayed determined, and never looked back. Even when we faced challenges, we kept our heads high and continued to push forward, proving what we’re capable of when we believe in ourselves and each other.” – Junior, Evan Morris

“Looking ahead to next year, I believe our team will be focused on living up to the high expectations set by this year’s senior class. They’ve established a strong foundation and set a high standard for our program-one that we must now carry forward. Fortunately, several returning players have already experienced the intensity and fast-paced nature of varsity competition. It will be their responsibility to lead by example and help coach the incoming players, ensuring that the standard remains high.
This season was especially meaningful for our team because we finally proved we could get over the hump. In recent years, we had been eliminated in the second or third round of the playoffs, but this time, we broke through that barrier. Throughout the offseason and preseason, a lot was said-doubts and criticism that ultimately fueled our desire to prove people wrong.
What made it even more special was that we felt we truly showed what it means to play for Kingwood Baseball. We demonstrated how valuable and meaningful it is to wear this jersey-and that it’s something that should never be taken for granted.” – Sophomore, Brock Hill

Last but certainly not least, we reached out to Coach of the Year and Kingwood alum, Coach Michael Oros, to reflect on what this state championship means to him—both as a former Mustang and now the leader of this remarkable team.

Humble ISD

“Baseball has always had a rich history here in the city of Kingwood. Like most kids in Kingwood, I dreamed of playing baseball for Kingwood High School and going to Round Rock to play for a state championship. I was very fortunate during my freshman year of high school to see a very talented group of seniors complete the goal. As soon as my playing career was over, I wanted to come back to Kingwood and try and replicate that season. I’ve been at Kingwood High School for 11 years and I’m extremely honored to have completed the ultimate goal with this group. They are the most united team I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of. We will miss the 19 seniors who played their last game in a Kingwood uniform, but they left a legacy that can never be taken away and will go down in Kingwood Baseball history. With that being said, I want to say thank you to the seniors for making it better than you found it and as always #KVE.”

Coach Oros’ journey from dreaming in the stands to leading from the dugout—entirely represents the spirit of Mustang Baseball: tradition, family, and leaving the jersey in a better place for the next player.

With leaders and returning starters, like Evan Morris, Graham Charboneau, Brock Hill, and Will Feidler, ready to carry the torch, the future of Kingwood Baseball looks as bright as its newly claimed state title. They are powered by a relentless work ethic, unshakable brotherhood, and an elite coaching staff that continues to shape champions on and off the field.
