UIL One-Act Play Competition 2019

Every year, the KHS Theatre Department participates in the One-Act Play competition, a Texas UIL competition where theatre programs travel, perform a 40-minute play, and are judged and ranked based off of their performance. There are various levels of competition: Zone, District, Bi-District, Area, Region, and State. This year, KHS Theatre performed The Elephant Man, the story of Joseph “John” Merrick and Frederick Treves, a severely deformed man and a doctor in Victorian England. The play was directed by Matthew Logan and Angela Washenfelder.

At the Zone competition, KHS competed at Atascocita High School against Atascocita High School, Humble High School, and Summer Creek High School, and they advanced to District. Ashton Ebert, Gabe Schulze, and Cami Kristoff received an All-Star Cast award, Mason Taylor received an Honorable Mention All-Star Cast award, Kelsey Nelson received an Individual Technician award, and the crew, consisting of Kelsey Nelson, Julia Goodman, Molly Gremillion, Emily Escareno, and Rachel Moore, received the Best Overall Tech award. KHS Theatre overall took 2nd place.

At the District competition, KHS competed at Atascocita High School against Atascocita High School, Humble High School, Dobie High School, Sam Rayburn High School, and Pasadena High School, and they advanced to Bi-District. Gabe Schulze received the Best Actor award, Rachel Moore received the Best Female Technician award, Cami Kristoff and Ashton Ebert received an All-Star Cast award, and Julia Goodman received an Individual Technician award. KHS Theatre overall took 3rd place.

At the Bi-District competition, KHS competed at San Jacinto College Central against Atascocita High School, Dobie High School, Deer Park High School, Ross Sterling High School, and North Shore High School, but unfortunately they did not advance to Area. However, Ashton Ebert received an All-Star Cast award and Gabe Schulze received an Honorable Mention All-Star Cast award.

On April 12th, the company had their final performance. Their performance was in the auditorium and was open for the public. Members of Dobie High School Theatre and Kingwood Park High School Theatre attended to show their support, as well as parents and friends of the company. The company recalled their favorite memories they made throughout the production and the experiences that helped them grow the most as performers, technicians, and people.
