The Kingwood Mustangs came into last Friday night’s game determined to make a statement. Facing a powerhouse Atascocita team, Kingwood started strong and showed flashes of the kind of football they’re capable of playing. For much of the first quarter, the Mustangs traded punches with one of the top teams in the district before turnovers and missed chances allowed the Eagles to pull away.

Quarterback Landon Hinson led the charge for Kingwood, delivering one of his most impressive passing performances of the season. With that 69-yard touchdown pass to Jayce Byers, Landon Hinson is now the single-season passing yards record holder! He continued to find Jace Byers on several big plays, including a long touchdown that had the Mustang sideline fired up. Byers finished with over 100 yards receiving and multiple scores, continuing to be one of Kingwood’s most reliable offensive weapons.

Kye Wheby added another touchdown and a series of clutch catches, giving the Mustangs balance and speed on the outside. The offense moved the ball with confidence early, spreading the field and keeping Atascocita’s defense on its heels.

Kingwood’s defense also made its presence felt in the opening quarter, forcing incomplete passes and closing gaps against the run. The Mustangs looked prepared and hungry to compete. But after a few promising drives, the momentum began to swing. A couple of turnovers gave Atascocita extra possessions, and they took advantage, scoring quickly to build a lead by halftime.
Even with the setbacks, Kingwood didn’t quit. Hinson continued to attack through the air, Wheby kept finding space downfield, and the team fought until the final whistle. The offense’s rhythm and effort showed the kind of growth this program has been building toward all season.
After the game, the message was clear — Kingwood has the talent and fight to hang with anyone, but execution and consistency have to finish the job. The Mustangs’ early spark showed what they can do when everything clicks.
It wasn’t the result they wanted, but it was a reminder that this group isn’t far from breaking through. Come out this Thursday Night @ Turner Stadium – 7:00 pm to support our team against a tough game against CE King who is having a great year.
