Kingwood delivered just what was hoped for on a home opening night Thursday to a full stadium ready to cheer on the Mustangs in their minion theme for the night. The fans are ready this year whether we play on Thursday, Friday or Saturday Night.
The Mustangs were not going to be denied and ran up a 38-0 shutout of the Clear Creek Wildcats. With a massive lead coming out of the third quarter, Kingwood eased past a comfortable finish and a victory.
Much of the Mustangs’ success was due to the chemistry between quarterback Landon Hinson and new wide receiver Kye Wehby. Hinson completed a season-high 173 yards and scored three touchdowns since October 2024, while Wehby grabbed a season-best 100 receiving yards and a score.
Special teams also made a considerable difference, netting 14 of Kingwood’s points. Its biggest highlight was provided by Wehby, who put on a highlight-reel act in a punt return TD that capped his breakout game.

We spoke with Kye Wehby following his phenomenal début and being awarded the offensive back of the game.
Kye stated, “The whole night felt surreal if I’m being honest, you know, going out there for the first time and doing what I did really felt special to me. The plan to stay focused is to take it week by week; we can’t look back at what we’ve done or look forward and get ahead of ourselves. With our current schedule, we have to stay focused on our opponent each week.”
It was a special night for Coach Ronnie Melton completing his 50th season of coaching Texas HS Football in this opener game with Clear Creek. Our program is blessed to have Coach Ronnie Melton as our Defensive Coordinator/DL Coach.

Kingwood still has two non-district games left on the schedule, and this week includes their first road trip tomorrow, Thursday, September 5, at 7:00 p.m., against La Porte High School. Mustang fans are encouraged to come out and support as the team looks to build on last season’s momentum, taking things to the next level one week at a time. Go Blue!
