Kingwood High School’s playoff journey has been a thrilling ride, showcasing grit and determination on the road. The Mustangs kicked off their playoff series with a nail-biting 34-33 victory over Clear Springs High School. In this game, star player Marquez Davis shone brightly, rushing for 152 yards and scoring an impressive five touchdowns. The defensive line, led by Casen McDonald and Sam Malone—who recorded four sacks and a season-high 19 tackles, respectively—played a pivotal role in stifling Clear Springs’ offense.
The momentum continued against Fort Bend Elkins, where Kingwood dominated with a 41-17 win. Davis was unstoppable, rushing for 280 yards, which included a 62-yard dash to the end zone, contributing to the team’s season-best 353 rushing yards. The defense remained robust, with Adeolu Dada and Casen McDonald combining for five sacks.
Kingwood’s unstoppable spirit and mindset carried them into a critical matchup against Strake Jesuit, finishing in a solid 27-16 victory. Davis continued his stellar performance with 154 rushing yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Holland Hargrave efficiently managed the game, throwing for 166 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 attempts. Wide receiver Jailen Monegan was a key target, snagging four receptions for 37 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Mustangs were relentless against Strake’s offense, with Jonathan Ankutse and Trace Taylor each snagging crucial interceptions that kept Strake in check. The two interceptions were critical to keeping the score down for Strake and changing the momentum of the game for the Mustangs. We asked Jonathan and Trace to comment on their role in this game and the next game against Summer Creek.
“Getting that interception at such a key moment in the game felt incredible–it was like all the preparation and hard word paid off in a single instant. It was a momentum-shifting play, and being able to contribute to the team’s success in that way is something I’ll never forget. This week, I’m focused on staying sharp, studying Summer Creek’s offense, and making sure I’m in the right position to help slow down their explosive plays. It’s going to take discipline and teamwork, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.” – Junior, Jonathan Ankutse
On special teams, Trace Taylor electrified the crowd with a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown, giving the Mustangs a significant boost in momentum. This week, Trace is bringing that same energy to the field, just as he has all season. Reflecting on the regional final, Trace emphasized the team’s focus: “We need to play really good defense, capitalize on turnovers, and win all three phases of the game.” – Senior, Trace Taylor
Sophomore, Cade Haug added 15 tackles, maintaining a strong defensive presence. Cade has been a strong contributor to the Mustang offense and one of the youngest players on the varsity team starting his freshman year. The Mustangs have two more great years to see what develops for Cade. Cade took some time to reflect on being one of the youngest on the team starting as a Freshman last year and what he is also doing to prepare for the big game with the Bulldogs.
“Being one of the youngest on the team was a massive hump to overcome at first but all the guys accepted me and allowed me to play to the best of my ability and have brought me up and taught me a lot. Now going into summer creek again, we know it’s gonna be a challenging game but this is what we’ve prepared for all year so we are 100% ready to go.” – Sophomore, Cade Haug
Often overlooked, special teams players are crucial to securing those pivotal extra points and field goals that keep games engaging. This season, junior Kyle Holcomb has been a standout, remaining calm and collected at every game, ready to execute his role. A multi-sport athlete and DECA officer, Kyle will transition to varsity soccer next season. When asked about his experience this season, Kyle shared insights into his composure on the field and his deep affection for the team and the game.
“I think beating Strake Jesuit truly set a tone or our mindset into our next game against Summer Creek, beating a team that continuously tried to break us down with social media really drove us into proving the haters wrong. As the kicker, I know my teammates count on me just as much as I count on them. I am calm because I believe in our team and I know they got my back.” – Junior, Kyle Holcomb
With over 2,000 rushing yards this season, Davis has more than doubled his previous year’s stats. Davis has been a leader on and off the field for the Mustangs, always showing up for practice to work and giving this Mustang team a chance to shine in a tough district with some great high school players this season (Blaylock, Mack, Bailey, Thomas, Carroll to name a few) and teams. We asked Davis what he was saying to his team this week to prepare them to face Summer Creek in a challenging match up at home against a team that has shut out teams this season.
“It feels great to be rewarded for all your hard work and manifestation. We’ll try to keep the momentum from the last few games by just playing as a team and going 110% every play. The fans and students can help by just showing up and being loud, their support has also driven us to be the team we are and we wouldn’t be here without them.” – Senior, Marquez Davis
