The chess club at Kingwood High School has seen an impressive transformation, all thanks to the hard work and drive of its members. Matthew Peak, the club’s president, successfully wrote and secured a grant from the HumbleISD Education Foundation’s Chess Material Initiative. This grant has provided substantial resources, including new equipment, for up to 50 members.
Under the leadership of Matthew and vice president Rohan Yelandur, the club is focused on improving its competitive performance while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for chess enthusiasts at every skill level. They offer free weekly lessons and are preparing for USCF-rated tournaments. As Matthew and Rohan are nearing graduation, they encourage all students, regardless of their chess experience, to join and contribute to the club’s ongoing success at Kingwood High School.
