This past weekend, the annual award ceremony called the Golden Globes honored artists and professionals and their work. These ceremonies have been held since 1944 every year. So why was this year different?
Well, for starters, the host this year was Jo Koy, a hardworking and successful (up until this weekend) comedian who was a late hire. The Golden Globes needed help finding someone to host the ceremony, leaving Jo Koy to accept the gig only weeks before the event. Only a few knew who this was and were optimistic to find out how this would go. But soon, that optimism faded when Koy took the stage to open the show. He made multiple offensive jokes, including one which compared the hit movies “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie,” making an explicit and derogatory statement towards the film Barbie that many, including the actors themselves, found offensive. Simu Liu, an actor from the hit movie, stated on Instagram, “How disgusting and sexist was this.” The joke backfired so badly that nobody clapped, and instead, they played a laugh track to keep the show going.
It’s safe to say that this joke alone caused many to be uncomfortable. But it didn’t stop there. Koy later continued to make another rude comment, saying, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.” The famous singer Taylor Swift didn’t know what to say; she tried to brush off the joke by taking a sip of her drink. After that night, she received plenty of backlash for being “too dramatic” when she tried to pretend as if she never heard him. As someone who is a big fan of Taylor Swift and the Barbie movie, it’s clear that Jo Koy’s so-called jokes were uncalled for and rude. Along with many others, he should have never gotten the job.
