They say rumors spread like wildfire, and before the start of this school year one rumor was causing an uproar amongst the KHS student body. After hearing that K Park had done away with their version of mustang hour, word of mouth mutated this conversation and the more dramatic the story got- the more rapidly it spread. Fast forward to about 9:00pm at the end of summer, my friends and I were grabbing dinner when we ran into what would seem like everyone and their mother doing the same (which seems to happen anytime you go anywhere in Kingwood). Eventually we all got onto the subject of Mustang Hour and the news it wouldn’t be back this year! Obviously this wasn’t true but the anguish we all felt most definitely was.
Mustang Hour is incredibly important to the student body, our schedules are all beyond full, and without our hour-long lunch many of us would be forced to sacrifice yet another hour of sleep. Despite the widely accepted opinion that many students squander Mustang Hour, many more of us use it very productively.
Dozens of organizations, seven classes that have tutorials multiple times each week, the ability to see counselors to ask questions, and going to the library to do homework with friends are just a few of the things we do at lunch in addition to well, eating lunch. Sure, for most this isn’t everyday- but we forget that resume building is just as important as being kids while we still can, so I think it is safe to say that Mustang Hour is valuable for all of us- and my opinion is just one of many. When I asked other students for their ideas on Mustang Hour, this is what they had to say:
“Lunch hour- it’s not just food, it’s wellness, freedom, and creativity.” -Anonymous
“Mustang Hour is important because it gives me time to go to tutoring and make up tests.” -Lily Brooks
“Mustang Hour is all about seizing the moment and making the most of it. It’s a time to do what brings you joy, spend time with friends, and catch up in school.” -Anonymous
“Mustang Hour is important/nice because I have an hour to get the things I need to get done on my own time.” -Amanda Payne
“Mustang Hour gives me time to catch up school work and homework as well as enjoy time with friends” -Alondra Robledo Mejia
Mustang Hour is of immense importance, without it who knows how in the world we would get everything done with so few hours in the day!
