One of my all-time favorite artists, Frank Ocean, is an iconic figure in the music industry, leaving an incredible mark with his lyrics and backstories. Born on October 18th, 1987, in Long Beach, California, he started his musical journey quickly in 2010 and became a source of inspiration for many worldwide.
Many of his listeners tend to listen to the beats, rhythm, or melody without fully delving into the lyrical depth Frank Ocean writes in each song. But what is the deeper meaning of the song?
One of my favorite albums is his 2016 Studio Album, Blonde, with the song “Ivy.” Ivy is a sad yet romantic song with many emotions and feelings Frank feels throughout his story. It focuses on a relationship that has gone wrong, reflecting on the beauty of falling in love and the pain of trying to keep it when it no longer lasts. The song follows a love story between Frank and his significant other, and he still has feelings deep down despite the breakdown of his relationship. The chorus is about him reminiscing on the start of their relationship and how it unexpectedly happened. Yet, it was the “start of nothing'” implying the innocence of the two at the time. Despite the pain of the breakup, Frank reflects on the memories shared between them, such as driving to a friend’s place and the deep feeling of still being “good.” The song ultimately conveys the beauty of love, both good and bad. Finally, Ivy goes beyond just a breakup. It profoundly reflects on humans and the mixed feelings in relationships. The song’s long-lasting impact is that it connects with everyone, providing comfort to those going through the ups and downs of love and those who have previously experienced it.
So overall, it’s not just a song; it’s a lyrical journey through love and heartbreak. Frank Ocean’s ability to blend in love with desolation in Ivy creates a timeless piece of art for any age, wherever. It’s a musical tapestry that not only shows the personal experiences of Frank Ocean but also offers reassurance and understanding to those going through the maze of love in their own lives.
